Rylee Eng is an elementary school teacher and dance 
 instructor in Victoria, BC.  She has been sharing her love of dance with her students for over 15 years and believes that using dance as a form of learning is the most beneficial way for all learners to engage and understand the material. As a primary teacher, Rylee embeds whole-body learning and dance education into her lesson plans and daily routines, and she hopes that this research will encourage other primary teachers to try it for themselves. Rylee is creating this website as part of her Masters’ of Educational Leadership requirements.

the purpose

Many view dance education as a category within the physical
 education curriculum. Often this content has been covered through a week or two of folk dance in the gym, where many students were reluctant to participate due to their fixed mindset, lack of self-efficacy surrounding the word ‘dance’, or fear of interacting with the opposite gender especially within the primary grades. But what if dance were to play an essential role in the implementation for learning and teaching within all curricular content, and throughout the overarching core competencies? What if we used dance not as an addition to the year’s expectations, but instead as a support? Fulfilling the necessity of creativity in the classroom while providing students an additional form of learning? If we were to embrace dance to its full potential within education research learners would: experience raised confidence, self-esteem and a sense of achievement, develop and maintain a growth mindset, be provided with a more durable and meaningful learning experience, and have the opportunity to explore learning in its entirety (Garrett & Wrench, 2018; Chua, 2015; Cook, Yip, & Goldin-Meadow, 2010; Cannon & Padilla, 1982).

The purpose of this website is to assist teachers in implementing
 dance education methods into their teaching to better support their students learning, confidence, and mindset, all while embracing the new British Columbian education curriculum and core competencies (which are integral in order to directly increase usefulness and interest for teachers). Throughout this website you will find videos and resources to support educators in embedding dance education into areas such as science, mathematics, and literacy, all while providing methods to practice the core competencies and exploring new, enjoyable forms of assessment.
